Storm Water

Stormwater Management

The Environmental Protection Agency defines stormwater as “rainwater or melted snow that runs off streets, lawns and other sites. When stormwater is absorbed into soil, it is filtered and ultimately replenishes aquifers or flows into streams and rivers. In developed areas, impervious surfaces such as pavement and roofs prevent precipitation from naturally soaking into the ground. Instead, water runs rapidly into storm drains, sewer systems and drainage ditches.”

Keeping culverts and ditches clear of debris is imperative to insure proper stormwater drainage throughout the city. Without effective drainage, property and habitats can be compromised in the event of heavy rains and possible flooding. Potential disasters can be decreased with simple routine maintenance:

  • Mow/weed eat drainage ditches and clear of leaves
  • Refrain from littering and pick up trash as you see it
  • Do NOT fill in culverts. Rocks, dirt, gravel, asphalt, concrete, branches, etc. are not permitted in drainage ditches.
  • Contacting Sansom Park Permits/Code Enforcement is required before installing driveways or structures. Nothing should impede in the effective flow of water though the waterways

Rain water and runoff in the waterways should be just that, water, but unfortunately it is not always the case. Illicit Discharges are any release to a municipal storm sewer system – storm drains, pipes, and ditches – that is not composed entirely of stormwater. Dumping or improper disposal of hazardous waste is illegal, dangerous and should be reported immediately to the City at Sansom Park at 817-246-4973. Some examples of illicit discharges include:

  • Septic Tank Seepage / Illegal Sanitary Connections / Sanitary Sewer Overflow
  • Improper Disposal of Cooking Oils, Grease & Fats / Household Waste
  • Pesticides and Fertilizers
  • Improper Automotive Disposal including motor oil, fluids, tires and the automobile itself
  • Laundry Wastewater / Detergent
  • Home Improvement Waste (concrete, paint, etc.)
  • Pool / Spa Discharge
  • Improper Disposal of Commercial and Industrial Hazardous Waste
